Tech people in an art warehouse

Most tech meetups look the same. A hotel room or an office, a projector, a panel, pizza, and the same conversations about hiring and funding. They are useful. They are also easy to forget.

Last night was different. TechIsland held "TechIsland × PSI Foundation: An 'Unspoken' Gathering" at PSI Foundation in Limassol, in the old Carob Warehouse on Synergatismou Street, from 19:00 to 22:00. I was there, and I'm genuinely glad events like this are happening.

Who was in the room

TechIsland is the largest tech association in Cyprus. It was set up as a non-profit in 2021 to grow the tech sector, and it runs professional communities such as HR, FinPro, Women in Tech and MarComms, the one I co-created.

PSI Foundation is a non-profit art foundation, set up in Limassol in 2024. Its focus is contemporary art in dialogue with technology. It also works to preserve the Carob Warehouse itself, which was listed in 2014 among the 100 outstanding works of Cypriot modernism.

Together they hosted An 'Unspoken' Gathering around the exhibition Bill Viola. Unspoken.

The "Unspoken" in the event name points to the exhibition now on view there: Bill Viola. Unspoken, made with Bill Viola Studio and curated by PSI's chief curator, Dimitri Ozerkov. Viola was one of the pioneers of video art, and his work is about time, perception and transformation.

Why it worked for me

What I can say without notes is this: a room changes the conversation. Put people who sell, build and market software in front of slow, quiet video work, and the small talk gets less transactional. You stop pitching and start asking what someone actually thinks.

What GTM marketers can take from it

Borrow a venue that does half the work. An ecosystem event competes with every other invite in the calendar. A space with its own story, such as a listed industrial building with a world-class exhibition, is a reason to come before anyone sees the agenda.

Partner across sectors, not just across companies. A tech association and an art foundation share an audience that neither fully reaches alone. PSI's stated mission is art in dialogue with technology, so the fit isn't forced. Look for partners whose mission already overlaps with your audience.

Leave room for the unspoken. Not every hour needs a panel. Time to walk, look and talk is where many of the useful connections happen.

Make it repeatable. One good evening is a nice memory. A series builds a community.

If you want to go

Bill Viola. Unspoken is on view at PSI Foundation, Synergatismou 27, Limassol. PSI runs free guided tours in Greek (18:30) and English (19:30) every Thursday, Friday and Saturday, by reservation. Check psi.art for current dates; the exhibition page lists them inconsistently.

Thank you to TechIsland and PSI Foundation for hosting.
